John Ruskin

John Ruskin (1819–1900) was a British art critic, social thinker, writer, and philanthropist, known for his influential ideas on art, architecture, and society. As a leading figure in the Victorian era, Ruskin championed the importance of beauty, craftsmanship, and the moral value of art in shaping society. His seminal works, such as Modern Painters (1843–1860), The Seven Lamps of Architecture (1849), and The Stones of Venice (1851–1853), emphasized the connection between art, nature, and morality. Ruskin was also a social reformer, critiquing industrialization and capitalism for dehumanizing workers and degrading the environment.

Lao Tzu

Lao tzu (also spelled Lao Zi or Laozi) is an ancient Chinese philosopher, traditionally regarded as the founder of Daoism (Taoism) and the author of the Tao Te Ching, one of the most influential texts in Chinese philosophy. Thought to have lived around the 6th century BC, Lao Zi’s life is largely shrouded in legend, and his historical existence is debated. The Tao Te Ching outlines the principles of the Tao (the Way), a fundamental force or natural order that governs the universe.  His teachings promote balance, self-awareness, and a deep connection to nature, and have had a lasting impact on Chinese culture, philosophy, and spirituality, influencing both Daoism and later schools of thought like Zen Buddhism.
